Where are you from?
How did you come up "Sporty and Rich” ?
I was with a friend one day and she commented on my Rolex saying, "rich," and I was also wearing sneakers and I said, "and sporty!" And then I started using it to describe my style and it just caught on really well, and now people comment and Tweet it back to me. Sometimes they even come up with their own versions which is so sweet!
Industry Secret ?
Be nice to everyone! You never know who you're going to meet and how they can possibly help you in the future. Plus, you should just be nice to everyone all the time! I love this motto I came across, "Being nice is cool." It really is!
Biggest challenge ?
Being far from my loved ones. I left home when I was 18, and I've been away from my family and friends since. But, it's the kind of sacrifice that you have to make if you want to pursue your goals and be successful. It does get lonely though and I always miss them, but it's comforting to know that they are just a plane ride away, which isn't so bad!
Describe your style ?
Sporty and rich of course! Which essentially means, mixing high with low, blending the lines between athletic wear and tailored goods. I like to maintain a clean, minimal and polished look, while also feeling laid back and comfortable. One of my favorite things to wear is a suit with sneakers, you look like you could go from a meeting to a jog and I love that contrast.
First job ?
I worked at my Grandma's filipino bakery, and it was actually really fun. I loved being surrounded by cakes and pastries all day!
Favorite place to shop in New York ?
I really love Modell's sporting goods. They have great basics like Russell Athletic's tees. Creatures of Comfort is also nice, it's curated really well and their products are of great quality. Also, Maryam Nassir Zadeh is the most beautiful store I have ever been to, the store itself is like one big mood board. And then I have a few hidden sneaker shops in Brooklyn where I get my dead stock Nike's.
I can’t stop listening to...
Daniel Caesar, he is my new favorite artist. He is a Toronto-based singer and is kind of like a mix between Frank Ocean and Andre 3000. It's a very refreshing sound for 2014, when music has been so underwhelming!
I’m inspired by...
My surroundings. I always make sure to be surrounded by beautiful things, you feel happier and your brain is able to remain in a creative state. When I'm in a dull or ugly setting it is very off putting! Travel is great for that.
I can’t live without...
A good pair of headphones.
Words to live by ?
"A positive attitude gives you power over your circumstances, instead of your circumstances having power over you."
