Rachael Wang - Fashion Market Director | NYLON
Where are you from?
Manhattan Beach, California
What brought you to New York?
I went to college in Boston, and when I finished school I wasn’t sure about what I wanted to do. I had the opportunity to come to New York because my aunt lived in Connecticut. I applied for a full time internship with W Magazine over the phone, and got hired. So I commuted into the city from Connecticut every morning.
What was your first job?
It was the summer after 7th grade, I was 12 and got paid to travel to Europe with my mom’s best friend and her two children. I went to Europe for a month- all expenses paid and got to experience what is was like to travel. It was an unbelievable experience and where I caught my travel bug.
What are you inspired by?
I’m inspired by everything; I know that’s so cliché. More than anything what I see around me in real life. I love books, pictures, classic old photography and art. However I find myself more inspired by real tangible things that I can see, or see moving in real life. I love people watching on the subway and when I travel, it’s the people I see and how they interact with each other. A lot of times what inspires me in my styling isn’t literal its building characters.
What’s on your playlist?
Well just after coming off training for the marathon. I have been listening to a lot of songs on repeat. I was planning to listen to my Kendrick Lamar Spotify station for the marathon, but there was no internet reception and it didn’t work. So I got stuck listening to the same Action Bronson record, like three songs on repeat for four hours.
Words to live by
Don’t ask, don’t get. My uncle who is a businessman once told me if you want something you have to ask for it.
